Credit Unions vs. Banks

There IS a difference!

Life is full of tough choices.  Paper or plastic?  Dinner or a movie?  Chocolate or vanilla?  Thankfully, choosing your financial partner isn't so difficult.

Bay Winds Federal Credit Union offers significant advantages over a bank when it comes to who we are and what we do.  We think you'll find it easy to see at Bay Winds Federal Credit Union, it pays to belong...

Credit Unions Banks
Member owned.  Credit unions may only serve their members within a chartered area. BWFCU's charter area includes Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Grand Traverse and Otsego counties. Individuals may become member by depositing as little as $1 in a prime share or checking account. Membership is not required to be served by a bank.  Customers have no ownership and are often required to deposit a minimum of $50 to $100 to open an account.  Banks are owned by investors who may not be depositors.
Not-for-profit.  Credit unions are cooperatives that exist only to serve their members.  Excess earnings are used to provide lower fees, lower loan rates and higher savings dividends to members (minus operating expenses). For-profit.  Banks are established to generate profits for stockholders/investors (minus operating expenses).
One member, one vote.  Credit union boards of directors are unpaid volunteers elected from the membership and by the membership through a democratic process. Only investors/stockholders have voting privileges.  Bank customers have no say in its operation. Bank directors are paid positions.
Accounts are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) up to $250,000. Accounts are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) up to $250,000.
Capital is raised only through earnings.  No restrictions in how capital is raised.

The Choice is Simple

Credit unions are operated by their membership for their membership with members seeing tangible rewards of the relationship through lower loan rates, higher dividends and low fees.
